Artist Statement
Using symbolism, figuration, and abundant details in my paintings and illustrations, I focus on creating surreal narratives involving combinations of plants, animals, and abstractions. These stories intertwine themes of mental health, community, environmentalism, and spirituality. I aim to share my experiences of these commonly shared subjects to foster further discussion of self-exploration, curiosity, and collectiveness.
The storytelling and knowledge that is rich throughout the natural world inspires me to embrace it as the medium for the narratives I seek to tell. We connect intuitively with the playfulness, optimism, fragility, and perseverance of nature – this understanding can encourage us to presently engage in unified problem-solving while daring to believe in a better future.
Bio
Maria Uhase is an oil painter and illustrator living and working in Northeast Ohio. She completed a BA Studio Emphasis with a Minor in Painting and a Minor in Drawing from the Myers School of Art at the University of Akron (OH) in 2019. She creates surreal narratives formed from real and imagined situations of subject matter from the natural world. Much of the inspiration for her art comes from her frequent experiences immersed in nature, travelling often to explore new environments, avid interests in biology, and interacting with her community.
